champions sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, food sovereignty and the rights of small farmers around the world.

Navdanya International
Continuing our series of Voices of Resilience in t Continuing our series of Voices of Resilience in the lead up to our Call to Action 2023, we present the farm, Michele from, Azienda Agricola Fratelli Riu, located in Monteforte, Sassari Sardinia. In December 2022, NI team members conducted on the ground research with farmers in Sardinia, to hear directly from them how they were practicing agroecology.

In this clip Michele describes how they think of their farm as an integrated, circular ecosystem. Nothing gets wasted. From milk to cheese production, animal manure and local biodiversity, everything is consciously interconnected. In this way the farm integrates multiple agricultural activities: a garden for family consumption, olive trees, fruit trees, sustainable water management, integration of animals in the local ecosystem.

For many years the farmers have also been purposefully cultivating a wide variety of native and agrobiodiversity. From local olive tree cultivars of olive trees, holm oaks, corbezzolo trees, ancient traditional fruit varieties, and many other plant species typical of the mediterranean.

This wild and cultivated biodiversity deeply influences even the taste of their traditionally made cheese. Cheese that is prepared using a 100 years old typical sardinian cauldron, passed on in their family from generation to generation.

From the 2nd to the 16th of October 2023 (and beyo From the 2nd to the 16th of October 2023 (and beyond…), join our Call to Action- Voices of Diversity, Voices of Resilience. Now, more than ever, is the protection of diversity, biodiversity, Food Freedom and Seed Freedom crucial for a future that cares for the Earth.

Today, we are facing the devastating consequences of the industrial food system and its false promises of food security, sustainability and climate adaptation through agrichemicals, GMOs and now gene editing and lab-made foods.

There is an urgent need for us to build a movement that responds to these threats, which are being promoted as solutions through a well orchestrated greenwashing propaganda campaign.
At a time when global lawmakers are pushing new technologies that will only further entrench the consequences of the industrial paradigm, it is vital to listen to the diversity of voices already practicing an ecological way of life. Voices that are also on the frontlines of the destruction caused by industrial agriculture. The voices of  women, indigenous people, peasants, and small farmers. These voices, based on experience, show us the bigger picture and remind us of the solutions we already have.
Today more than ever we need the agroecological cultures of the world to take the forefront and show us what it means to be rooted in harmony with the Earth.
Join us by organizing People’s Assemblies, Events, or Actions to reclaim and reshape our food system, in parks, squares, gardens, schools and communities – wherever you are to take back our Seed, and Food Freedom.

About us 🍀🥬🍃🌴🌳🍊🍎🍓🍒🥒🥔🍋🌽🥕🍯🥦🍅🍇🥜🥩🥥🍏🌎💚

In light of many new followers, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves.
We’re Navdanya International, Navdanya’s (India) sister organization, based in Italy. (Even though we have team members all over the world).

We were established in 2011 by our president Dr. Vandana Shiva to strengthen Navdanya’s India global outreach in its mission to protect nature, Earth’s biodiversity, defend farmers’ rights to save, exchange and evolve seeds, and protect indigenous knowledge and culture.

We work on creating interconnections between movements, actors and issues both on the ground and through international movement building, by working with a diversity of networks and partners all over the world– from teachers, to citizens, farmers, policy makers, and scientists.

We work to promote food and seed that is chemical-free, creates and promotes health being of both humans and nature, is accessible to all, and works in harmony with the Laws of Nature.

We envision a world in which we think, live, and act as members of one Earth Family interconnected through the web of life. Where the world sees a rejuvenation of biodiversity, soil, and water, and where small farms can produce diverse and healthy food as a means of regenerating the planet and community.

Thank you for coming along with us on this journey to a regenerated planet.

“At a time when global lawmakers are pushing new technologies that will only further entrench the consequences of the industrial paradigm, it is vital to listen to the voices of diversity already practicing an ecological way of life. Voices that are also on the frontlines of the destruction caused by industrial agriculture. The voices of women, indigenous people, peasants, and small farmers. These voices, based on experience, show us the bigger picture and remind us of the solutions we already have.”

To begin this series we have Maria Grazia, one of the owners of a family-run farm, Agriturismo Sa Mandra. It is a multifunctional farm located in North-West Sardinia, in the Nurra region, Alghero province. The farm integrates highly diverse activities, including cultivation of multiple mediterranean crops and animal breeding.

Her parents moved to Nurra coming from Fonni, a small town located in the mountains of central Sardinia with an ancient tradition of pastoralism and transumanza (a traditional practice of migration with the animals from the snowy mountains to the green plains in winter). They learned how to make cheese and breed sheep and other animals from their parents and grandparents, the traditional sardinian way.

Maria Grazia delivers a key message , “Real food is the food that is produced by farmers, not the lab-made food that the European Union is now trying to push in our countries”.

Join us in showcasing and recognising real voices of resilience.
