Towards a bee-friendly agriculture for a healthy environment
In the European Union, bees are disappearing, birds have stopped singing in our farmlands and the number of farmers is decreasing at an alarming pace. The current model of intensive farming has led to a massive decline of nature: butterflies and insects have disappeared, once common birds are becoming rare. At the same time citizens are continuously exposed to toxic synthetic pesticides and our rivers and streams polluted. We, as citizens from all over Europe, are rising up against this industrialised agricultural system that currently leads to the collapse of biodiversity, the disappearance of small and family farms and asterile landscapes. As a civil society coalition, we have a clear vision of a better way forward: a clean way of producing our food, without agrochemicals, healthier for us and nature, and with vibrant rural communities – safeguarding the rich diversity of European food and agricultural traditions.
We are now coming together from all over the European Union to form the European Citizens’ Initiative “Save bees and farmers! Towards a bee-friendly agriculture for a healthy environment”. By collecting one million signatures throughout the European Union by 30 September 2021, we will give voice to those people who want the system to change to benefit us all: farmers, consumers and the environment.
In our European Citizens’ Initiative we are setting forth three core demands:
In order to protect bees and people’s health, and in order to help farmers to become independent from the agrochemical industry, we call on the European Commission to propose legal acts to:
Phase out synthetic pesticides by 2035
Phase out synthetic pesticides in EU agriculture by 80% by 2030, starting with the most hazardous, to become 100% pesticide free by 2035.
Restore biodiversity
Restore natural ecosystems in agricultural areas so that farming becomes a vector of biodiversity recovery.
Support farmers in the transition
Reform agriculture by prioritising small scale, diverse and sustainable farming, supporting a rapid increase in agroecological and organic practice, and enabling independent farmer-based training and research into pesticide- and GMO-free farming.
