We live in an era where our connection with food and with the communities that grow it has been lost. Food, whose primary purpose is to provide nourishment and health, has now become a commodity and a central cause for health problems, inequality and environmental degradation around the world. In order to re-establish the connection between us, our food and ecology, we need to become aware of our inherent connection with the Earth. Our relationship to food must be lived through giving back to the Earth and becoming part of the natural cycles that sustain all life.
In response to the crises of our food system we are seeing the rise of fake food alternatives which claim to be real solutions. But upon further inspection these alternatives only further sever our connection to the web of life, since they directly depend on the very industrial agrifood system they claim to solve, through dependence on GMO monocultures, pesticides and a polluting global supply chain. In the end, these new products represent a dangerous fusion between new biotechnologies, hyper-processed food, and the industrial billionaires that control the agrifood chain.
This session, organised by Navdanya, will discuss how we must re-establish our connection with eating as an ecological act in defiance of the false solutions that shift political power away from regenerative farmers and local communities.
