It is with much sadness that we received news of the passing of Professor Marcello Buiatti.
His lifelong commitment and contributions to justice, sustainability and peace were an inspiration to us all from the time we began working together at the first meeting of the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture in 2003, together with a group of leading activists, academics, scientists, politicians and farmers from North and South committed to building more socially and ecologically sustainable food and agriculture systems. As a leading geneticist, his deep commitment to a science of interconnectedness made him a leading voice in the environmental movement to preserve and safeguard our biodiversity. He will be much missed.
