Salvatore Ceccarelli was associate professor of Genetic Resources and subsequently Genetic Enhancement at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Perugia until 1987. In 1980 he started working at the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Aleppo in Syria where he remained until 2011. In 1995, he began experimenting with participatory genetic improvement in countries such as Syria, Jordan, Algeria, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen and Iran with the aim of reconciling the increase in agricultural production, Biodiversity and adaptation of crops to climate change. More recently he introduced evolutionary genetic improvement with the aim of bringing seed control back to farmers‘ hands. He is currently also involved in several selection projects in Italy in Piedmont, Friuli and Venice Giulia, Tuscany, Marche, Molise, Basilicata, Apulia and Sicily.
