From June 3 to 11 2022, Dr. Vandana Shiva, President of Navdanya International, took part in a series of events and festivals in various locations in Italy and France. The tour started in Naples and continued through Rome and Florence to Turin, and ended in Sorgues, France.
Out of the various debates and discussions emerged how caring for the democracy of the Earth represents the decisive challenge to save ecosystems and the food sovereignty of peoples.
There is a need for renewed human solidarity, in contrast to the current trend of the global economy, characterised by a small group of powerful people committed to extracting every resource from nature to the detriment of the rest of the world.
The current predatory economy based on neo-liberal policies is shaped by the greed paradigm of large corporations at the expense of common goods, indigenous knowledge, health, democracy and food sovereignty.
The future of the next generations can only be safeguarded by choosing the path of care and respect for the Earth, which implies a profound transition of the global economic, cultural and environmental paradigm.
The authentic meaning of economy as 'care for the common home' needs to be recovered, in opposition to the current extractive paradigm aimed solely at profit. This requires a revolution in the way we produce and consume.
The economy of care is the only possible future for the sustainability of agri-food systems, because it creates abundance and life for soils, plants, animals and humans.
"It is necessary to stop the wars against the soil, and its workers and our bodies, and to develop an agriculture of peace.
A future for all life on Earth and for all people can only come from care. Greed does not leave enough ecological space for all, while care amplifies our capacity to live together. Therefore, care is the revolution of our times" — Dr Vandana Shiva Read more

Especially as an intimate connection exists between the biodiversity of our diets and gut, and our surrounding ecosystems, making health a continuum. Biodiversity is, hence, needed at every level of the food system. Read more
Thanks to recent advances in synthetic biology and artificial intelligence, a wide array of synthetic foods have begun to flood the market. The are not the sustainable, climate-friendly solutions they claim to be, but represent the next generation of ultra-processed junk foods, and a new means to consolidate even more power and profit into the hands of a few food giants without facing the implications of ecological devastation, worsening human health, and exacerbated climate change.
