{"id":19265,"date":"2020-12-18T13:58:40","date_gmt":"2020-12-18T12:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/navdanyainternational.org\/?p=19265"},"modified":"2023-05-06T14:14:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-06T12:14:13","slug":"30-40-years-indian-farmers-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navdanyainternational.org\/es\/30-40-years-indian-farmers-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian farmers\u2019 30 year struggle against corporate globalisation and 40 year struggle against the green revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Green Revolution<\/strong> left farmers discontented and indebted as the result of degraded soil, and pest-ridden crops, which caused slavery and disillusionment as well as <strong>tension in the State of Punjab<\/strong> between the farming community and a newly centralized state taking charge of agricultural policy as well as agricultural commodities\u2019 prices, finance and credit. Before the Green Revolution, \u200b \u200bPunjab was the\u200b\u200b land of five rivers, prosperous, \u200bwith \u200bhard-working farmers\u200b.\u200b\u00a0 <strong>By\u00a01984 Punjab<\/strong> farmers were protesting against this slavery\u200b. \u00a0It <strong>became a land of violence and war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 1984 Punjab farmers were protesting against the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GreenRevolution?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GreenRevolution<\/a> model saying if you cannot choose what you grow or how you will grow it , these are conditions of slavery . They have already paid a very high price with debt , suicides &amp; a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CancerTrain?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CancerTrain<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FNOjapGo4e\">https:\/\/t.co\/FNOjapGo4e<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Dpu9fvOyLC\">https:\/\/t.co\/Dpu9fvOyLC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Vandana Shiva (@drvandanashiva) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drvandanashiva\/status\/1336727031527043072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>deregulation of commerce<\/strong> has been pushed by the corporate world since the onset of <strong>GATT and WTO<\/strong> where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2003\/sep\/08\/wto.fairtrade8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules were written by corporations<\/a> to enlarge their freedom to commodify and privatise land, water, seed, food, information, data, and knowledge.<br \/>\n<strong>By enclosing the commons, the freedom of people, their cultures and democracies is destroyed<\/strong>. It is about an end to real economies where independent producers exchange and sell goods at fair and just prices. Along the same lines, the <strong>World Bank\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.synbiowatch.org\/2013\/09\/green-greed-seeds-of-injustice-by-vandana-shiva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structural adjustments<\/a> imposed in 1991<\/strong> dismantled India\u2019s food security system. By removing the laws regulating markets, prices and stock-holding, it \u00a0destroyed farmers\u2019 livelihoods, people\u2019s right to food and food as a public good, in order to create a \u201cfree market\u201c in corporate commodities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Corporations have been trying to impose <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/freetrade?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#freetrade<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/deregulation?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#deregulation<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Agriculture?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Agriculture<\/a> since 1990s . Freedom for corporations translates into unfreedom for farmers &amp; consumers . Farmers income collapse , consumer prices increase <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PolarisationofPrices?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PolarisationofPrices<\/a>=superprofits for corporations <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TTH9d8SpdZ\">pic.twitter.com\/TTH9d8SpdZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Vandana Shiva (@drvandanashiva) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drvandanashiva\/status\/1335778078690185216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>Half a million farmers participated in a historic Seed Freedom &#8211; Bija Satyagraha rally In 1993 at Bangalore\u2019s Cuban\u2019s Park. This was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunsonline.org\/trade\/areas\/intellec\/10040093.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first international protest<\/a> against WTO.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Indian farmers\u2019 protests we are witnessing today are a continuation of these earlier protests and are against the World Bank conditionalities being made law.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Millions of farmers are today protesting across the streets of Delhi to ask the government to cancel the so called \u201cFarm Bills\u201d, the new laws passed to deregulate the market. A step taken which ignores the trade unions that represent some 650 million workers of the sector, and which,\u00a0clearly,\u00a0is in the interest of the big agribusiness corporations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the strikes and public protests continue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/opinion\/panorama\/food-sovereignty-of-farmers-citizens-given-a-go-by-903909.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vandana Shiva, president of Navdanya International, underlines<\/a> that <strong>the so called \u201cFarm Bills\u201d are in reality`Food System Bills\u2019.<\/strong> They indeed will determine food production, farmers\u2019 incomes, food prices, and will have impacts on soils, biodiversity and natural resources endangering 70 years of a regulatory system to protect small farms, small farmer livelihoods and food sovereignty of the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government initiative does not come as a surprise. On the contrary, the attempt to hand over\u00a0the Indian agriculture sector to international corporations is as old as Navdanya,\u00a0created over 30 years ago\u00a0by Vandana Shiva to stop such\u00a0corporate takeover. As Navdanya&#8217;s founder attests: \u201c<strong>The World Bank and Corporations\u00a0 have been trying to introduce these laws to dismantle India\u2019s food Sovereignty since the 1991 Structural Adjustment. For 30 years we have stopped these laws.<\/strong> If they are not repealed, they will destroy <em>what is still <\/em>the biggest food system of the world, real farming by real farmers, created and\u00a0sustained by small farmers over thousands of years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These laws embody the push towards corporate globalisation in the name of \u201cfree trade\u201d and competitiveness, perpetuating the neoliberal illusion that \u00abthe market regulates itself,\u00bb while instead the consequences for local economies and small farmers are devastating. This so called \u201cfreedom\u201c is only for corporations and their masked owners, a term misused to destroy the Earth\u2019s ecological fabric \u2014 the fabric of people\u2019s economies and societies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The farmers\u2019 struggle in India is for the common future of humanity<\/strong>: Will we have a future of fake food without farmers, without diversity, without food democracy? or a future of healthy food for all grown by real farmers in abundant biodivesty, growing real food, taking care of our health and the health of the planet?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background \u2013 Navdanya<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When in 1991 the Dunkel Draft Text of the WTO agreement was leaked, and the patenting of seed leading to monopolies became a reality, Navdanya organised awareness campaigns and rallies to alert farmers across the country. It spearheaded the movement to protect and create awareness amongst farmers and also to sensitize policy makers and politicians on <a href=\"https:\/\/seedfreedom.info\/campaign\/seed-freedom-and-food-democracy\/\">farmers\u2019 rights to seed<\/a> to prevent the discussion being determined by the corporate sector and interests driven by profit motives.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WAiulmioWyY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The organization has been instrumental in conserving biodiversity through the set up of over 120 community centered, decentralised indigenous <a href=\"https:\/\/navdanyainternational.org\/what-we-do\/navdanya-community-seed-banks\/\">seed banks<\/a> across India, which are making farmers free of dependence on costly, unreliable, and nutritionally empty seeds and helping them move from vulnerability to resilience in the context of climate change. It\u2019s work with small farmers has shown that small biodiverse farms based on agro-ecology and nutrition-sensitive agriculture <a href=\"https:\/\/navdanyainternational.org\/publications\/wealth-per-acre\/\">can provide<\/a> full and adequate nutrition to twice India\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2006, with the growing farmers\u2019 suicides in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, known as the suicide belt of the country, Navdanya, under its Seeds of Hope program, mobilized the movement to protect farmer\u2019s rights to seed saving and seed sharing, providing guidance and assistance to the farmers, also distributing the indigenous variety of seeds to the farmers encouraging them to shift to organic and sustainable agriculture, as <a href=\"https:\/\/seedfreedom.info\/campaign\/no-to-bt-cotton-campaign\/\">in 2015<\/a> when cotton farmers started loosing their harvest to the whitefly pest attacks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sjvxVE4NRM4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the mid-2000s Big Agribusiness has been pushing for the introduction of new GMOs in India.\u00a0 Bt Brinjal was approved for commercialization in India in 2009. Navdanya joined the movement opposing the approval, and &#8211; after much public outcry and rounds of debates, the Indian government passed a moratorium on Bt Brinjal in February 2010, introducing a ban that is in place until today. Amidst the relentless push by biotech lobbies to impose GM Mustard in India, Navdanya along with multiple civil society organizations are once again since 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/seedfreedom.info\/campaign\/sarson-satyagraha-civil-disobedience-against-gmo-mustard\/\">on the frontline to resist the GM Mustard<\/a>. This is not the first time that Indian mustard is under threat. <a href=\"http:\/\/seedfreedom.info\/gmo-in-my-mustard\/\">In 1998 India\u2019s indigenous edible oils<\/a> made from mustard, coconut, sesame, linseed and groundnut processed in artisanal cold-press mills were banned, using \u201cfood safety\u201d as an excuse. The restrictions on import of soya oil were simultaneously removed. The result was that one million oil mills in villages were closed. \u00a0And millions of tons of artificially cheap GMO soya oil continue to be dumped on India. During that time, women from the streets of Delhi joined forces with Navdanya and the National Women\u2019s Alliance for Food Sovereignty (Mahila Anna Swaraj) to start the Sarson Satyagraha and succeeded in bringing back pure mustard oil.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WaShEN1-m-I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Navdanya has been supporting farmers\u2019 seed and food sovereignty and local food economies by exposing the imports of foreign commodities, such as soy to replace indigenous oil seeds and <a href=\"https:\/\/seedfreedom.info\/campaign\/pulse-of-life\/\">pulses<\/a>, that kept increasing through the policy of dumping and manipulation. Along the same lines the organization has been defending <a href=\"https:\/\/seedfreedom.info\/satyagraha-for-gandhis-ghani\/\">artisans\u2019 rights to produce oil seed<\/a>, which were served a notice in 2015 under the corporate driven regulations of the new FSSAI Act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The roots of the contemporary Agrarian Crisis lie in 50 years of the chemical intensive, capital intensive, monoculture based \u201cGreen Revolution\u201d, and 20 years of corporate globalisation, which has transformed Indian Agriculture into a market for costly seed and chemical inputs and a supplier of cheap commodities.
