Terrae Vivae: Regenerating Communities through Agroecological Action

A new article of Navdanya International highlights how the Terrae Vivae journey is advancing the regeneration of local communities and landscapes, the promotion of local knowledge, and the protection of biodiversity, through agroecology. Read the full article HERE on our website.

The Biodiversity Festival: A Community Workshop

On June 1st, the second edition of the Biodiversity Festival took place at the local farmers’ market in Manziana, Italy. This event is a key part of the Terrae Vivae journey led by Navdanya International. The initiative brings people together to build more conscious and sustainable communities, focusing on local food, environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and the well-being of people and animals. Each year, the Festival creates a space for farmers, citizens, researchers, and young people to meet, share ideas, and collaborate.

Biodiversity is Life: Navdanya International’s New Short Film

This year, the Festival featured the launch of our short film “Biodiversity is Life”—a visual narrative highlighting the role of communities, youth, farmers, and seed keepers in building fair and resilient food systems. The journey begins in India, at Navdanya’s Earth University, which for over twenty years has welcomed small farmers and students from around the world to share the philosophy and practice of agroecology. Through testimonials and footage of hands-on learning in farms and fields, the film shows how biodiversity is at the heart of a democratic and sustainable society, restoring the central role of people and local knowledge in food governance.

A Concrete Response to the Industrial Model

Today, food production is dominated by a global industrial system that harms biodiversity and people’s health, while depleting and polluting water, air, and soil. Terrae Vivae was created as a response to this crisis, promoting the direct involvement of citizens and producers in deciding how food is grown, distributed, and consumed. In this sense, producing food is also a political and social act: it means defending the commons, regenerating the environment, and revitalizing local solidarity economies.

Agroecology as a Model for Transformation

Terrae Vivae promotes agroecology not just as a farming technique, but as a holistic vision that brings together scientific knowledge, tradition, and local wisdom. The journey aims to create new connections between people, nature, and cultures, fostering regenerative communities where everyone plays an active role in caring for the environment.

Educating for Sustainability

Education is at the core of Terrae Vivae: learning by doing, in dialogue across generations and in close contact with the land. This journey strengthens environmental responsibility and empowers young people as active agents of change. The goal is to build communities capable of facing environmental and social challenges, promoting a new ecological literacy.

The Biodiversity Festival: A Call to Action

The Biodiversity Festival is where all these values take tangible form: workshops, games, and intergenerational dialogue. It is also an open invitation to join the Terrae Vivae movement, defending the right to healthy, local, and fair food. Cultivating ecological awareness means acting together to regenerate our territories and restore dignity to our communities.
