Navdanya International in 2024, A year of celebrating Community Resilience
In 2024, Navdanya International celebrated a transformative year of resistance, resilience, and renewal, guided by our vision of an interconnected ecological future. As we deepened our commitment to protecting biodiversity and fostering ecological resilience and literacy, we worked alongside farmers, indigenous communities, youth, policy makers and global movements to co-create solutions rooted in nature’s rights and ecological care.
Through efforts like our “Biodiversity is Life, Not an Asset Class” campaign, we challenged the financialization of nature and emphasized the value of biodiversity as the living fabric that sustains life. In Mexico, we stood in collaborative resistance with Latin American movements, indigenous leaders and policymakers against GMO imperialism, defending centers of biodiversity against the imposition of bioimperalism. Globally, we connected movements to mobilize against bio-imperialism and promote rights-based ecological governance.
Initiatives in ecological education have led to the development of the framework Ecoculturae, a holistic program with an innovative approach that blends traditional knowledge with ecological stewardship to nurture global resilience by empowering local communities. The programs Water is Life and Blue Communities focused on education and active citizenship concerning global and local water resources. The second edition of Biodiversity is Life was launched, with a renewed emphasis on participative learning in agroecology, ecosystems, and the circular economy.
Events like the Vasundhara Festival amplified these efforts, creating spaces for dialogue and collective action. Through ways of knowing, resisting, and relating, Navdanya International has strengthened its mission to build a regenerative future.
We are deeply grateful to the many individuals, communities, and movements that have joined us in this collective mission to protect the Earth and its diversity of life. Together, we have made significant strides toward ensuring a just and sustainable future where people and the planet thrive in harmony. |

Ways of Knowing - Elevating Knowledge to Inspire Action: Resisting the Financialization of Nature
The global decline in biodiversity is an ecological crisis that demands immediate attention. Yet, far from addressing the root causes of this crisis, market-driven solutions such as biodiversity credits and Nature Asset Companies (NACs) are commodifying nature under the guise of conservation. These schemes transform ecosystems into tradable financial assets, prioritizing corporate profits over ecological health and community well-being.
In response, Navdanya International launched the Biodiversity is Life, Not an Asset Class campaign in 2024. This campaign exposes the dangers of financializing biodiversity while advocating for community-led conservation efforts rooted in nature’s rights, community sovereignty, and ecological justice.
Campaign Highlights
- Reports and Resources: We released the Biodiversity is Life, Not an Asset Class report, a critical analysis of biodiversity credits, available in English, Spanish, and Italian. Alongside this, we developed practical tools such as the Biodiversity is Not for Sale illustrated booklet and a concise factsheet to empower grassroots movements with the knowledge to resist financialization.
- Global Dialogue: Our May webinar, Biodiversity is Life: Rights of Nature vs Financialization of Nature, brought together international experts, including Dr. Vandana Shiva, to discuss the risks of market-driven conservation models and the importance of community-led initiatives.
- Vasundhara Festival 2024: Held in October, this vibrant celebration united activists, farmers, youth, and community members in workshops, cultural performances, and discussions on biodiversity and the rights of nature. The festival underscored that biodiversity is not a commodity but an interconnected system of life that forms the basis of cultures of resilience.
Through these efforts, the campaign has mobilized communities globally, fostering a deeper understanding of the need to resist the commodification of nature and embrace holistic conservation approaches. |

Ways of Resisting: Defending Food Sovereignty Against GMO Imperialism
In 2024, Navdanya International intensified its efforts to combat GMO imperialism, which continues to threaten biodiversity, food sovereignty, and traditional agricultural practices. The imposition of GMOs and industrial food systems undermines local farmers, commodifies seeds, and disrupts ecosystems.
This year, we stood in solidarity with Mexico’s fight to protect maize at its center of origin, launching a campaign in January that laid the groundwork for a series of impactful events in March. These events highlighted the importance of seed freedom and united Latin American movements in the fight against bio-imperialism.
Key Achievements
- Strategic Alliances: Navdanya International facilitated online and in-person meetings with partners from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia, and Costa Rica to exchange strategies for resisting GMOs, countering the financialization of biodiversity, and supporting local food systems.
- High-Level Engagement: In collaboration with Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture, Ministery of Culture and Ministry of the Environment, we participated in seminars and roundtables that emphasized the role of agroecology and indigenous knowledge in protecting biodiversity in government policy.
- Public Mobilization: The March event, Defending Biodiversity, Strengthening Seed Freedom: Resisting GMOs, Seed and Food Imperialism, brought together over 800 participants, including indigenous leaders, farmers, and civil society organizations. This powerful gathering galvanized resistance to the industrial food system and showcased the strength of global solidarity.
These efforts have strengthened alliances across Latin America, positioning the region as a leader in the global fight for biodiversity, seed sovereignty, and ecological justice. Extensive media coverage amplified the voices of grassroots movements, ensuring that their message reached a global audience. |

Ways of Living - Realizing a Regenerative Vision: Building Resilient Communities Through Ecoculturae
For over thirty years, Navdanya has been active in education, and since 2012 through the Earth University, located at Navdanya Biodiversity Conservation Farm in Doon Valley, India, and visited annually by dozens of students from around the world.
Navdanya International recognizes the importance of localized action in building resilient, sustainable communities. In 2024, we strengthened our grassroot programs in Italy, launching four initiatives which involved over 240 young people, while another group of at least 150 has already expressed interest to be part of the upcoming programs. The educational initiatives engaged local youth in hands-on learning about agroecology, biodiversity and water conservation, and resource management, fostering deep connections with their local communities. These programs inspired a graphic novel translated into Italian, English and Spanish entitled Biodiversity is Life.
This growing impact led to the creation of Ecoculturae—a holistic approach to grassroots action that promotes ecological literacy and empowers communities to take meaningful action. By linking education with action, Ecoculturae aims to establish a local model for global ecological regeneration.
Program Milestones
- Strategic Alliances: Navdanya International established its first strategic partnership with local institutions in Latium, Italy. The agreement enables collaboration and internships through ministry-approved high school programs, offering students the opportunity to actively engage in ecological education, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives
- Expanding Participation: In 2024, our grassroots initiatives quadrupled their reach compared to 2023, directly engaging over 240 young people and indirectly benefiting approx 500 family members. Through four targeted initiatives, participants explored ecological education, resource management, active citizenship, and rural development, including visits to and hands-on learning from local agro-ecological farms.
- Rural framework enhancement: Our initiatives actively connected six agro-ecological farms, three schools, and four local associations, including a newly established farmers' market. This growing network highlights new opportunities for collaboration in 2025 and strengthens the foundation for an enhanced rural framework.
The program’s success demonstrates the transformative potential of education in fostering ecological awareness and resilience. It has not only inspired participants but also laid the groundwork for expanding Ecoculturae to other communities globally.
A Unified Vision for the Future
Navdanya International’s work in 2024 reflects the interconnectedness of our efforts to resist the commodification of nature, defend food sovereignty, and build resilient communities. These struggles are not isolated but part of a unified vision for a sustainable future where biodiversity thrives, ecosystems are protected, and communities are empowered to lead the transition to regenerative practices.
As we enter 2025, we renew our commitment to ecological justice, food sovereignty, and community resilience. Together, we can build a world where nature, culture, and agriculture are celebrated and safeguarded for future generations. |
